American Natural & Organic Spices™
A spice is part of a plant (dried seed, root, leaf, bark, etc.) used as a food additive for flavoring or preservation. The FDA defines spice as, "... any aromatic vegetable substance in the whole, broken, or ground form, except for those substances which have been traditionally regarded as foods, such as onions, garlic and celery; whose significant function in food is seasoning rather than nutritional; that is true to name; and from which no portion of any volatile oil or other flavoring principle has been removed."

More About Organic Flavorings
The process of adding flavor to food is called "seasoning." Several methods are used to season food with spices. Spices can be rubbed into meat, added to a sauce or sprinkled on after cooking. They can be heated in oil to unlock their flavor, or prepared in a cold oil infusion. Cooks combine spices in complementary mixtures, such as Chinese Five Spice or French Herbes De Provence.
Spice extracts are essential oils which have been removed from the spice. Spice extracts are convenient for use in food industry. Spice extraction methods include steam, hot water, solvent and carbon dioxide. Organic spice extracts are prepared without the use of solvents. Spice extracts and essential oils are also used in aromatherapy.
